Great artistic talent gathered in the chapel at Archbishop Carroll on Wednesday night, where inductions into the music honors society of Tri-M and the National Art Honors Society were held. These societies exist to encourage expansion of the music and art programs through fundraising, awareness, and leadership. The room was packed with students and their families, and was reverently quiet as Joe O’Brien, Suzanne Carpenter, Brittany Young, and several chorus members played soft music in the back of the chapel. Father Speziale began the event with a prayer and a ceremonial blessing of the pins. The new inductees then received those pins, as well as their certificates of achievement. Several speeches were made, including those of the current band and chorus Presidents of Tri-M, Conor Quinn and Samantha DiCarlo, respectively, who asserted a call for the members of our honors societies to leadership, creativity in new projects, and great pride in our programs. Dr. Schulz and Mr. Fox also elaborated on the meaning of music in their lives, as well as in our music programs here at Carroll. The present seniors in the different honors societies also received their graduation cords, which they will wear around their necks as badges of honor when graduation day comes.
The officer positions for the 2017-2018 school year were announced for Tri-M and NAHS during the ceremony: for chorus, President Shaelyn Fabik, Vice-President Justina Tran, Secretary Molly Dorsey, and Treasurer/Publicity Angela Alquiros; for band, President Julia Lundeen, Vice-President Thomas Donovan, and Secretary Kieran McCormack; for art, President Daniel Roscioli, and Vice-President Thomas Brill; for orchestra, President Suzanne Carpenter.
Decorations and refreshments were generously set out for attendees in the hallway, with the desserts made from the sweetest members of the Carroll community, our very own St. Katherine Day School students! A few members of chorus and some accompanists played music as everyone gathered around and socialized, ending the evening surrounded by friends. The overwhelming sense of community was the greatest aspect of the night; it showed the closeness of the Carroll Arts members, and inspired great hope for the future. Great anticipation is in the air for next year, where the arts programs will certainly thrive under the new leadership; as leader of the band division, I can say in full confidence that great things lie in the future of the arts programs here at Archbishop Carroll.
