Project Appalachia Carwash a Success

On Saturday, the members of Project Appalachia held a carwash to raise money for the expenses of our trip. Project Appalachia is Carroll’s first ever service trip, where we will be traveling to Harlan, Kentucky for one week to build houses. Father Speziale, Mrs. Young, Mr. Gennaro, and Mrs. Bourgeois will be chaperoning this trip, and helped us organize our fundraisers to lessen the expenses we would have to pay. In May, we had a bake sale in the cafeteria and raised $287, but our carwash on Saturday was much more successful.

We held the carwash at the Sunoco on the corner of Ridge Pike and Trooper Road from 9:30am to 12:30pm, and we arrived at 9am to set up all of our supplies. We set up the hose, filled our buckets, and practiced by washing Father Spez’s car. We were prepared to wash cars for the next 3 hours, but around the time we were getting ready to start, it began to rain. This weather threw us off a bit, and by 10:30am we had only washed about 15 cars, as nobody really wants to get their car washed when it's raining. However, we were able to still raise a lot of money standing on the side of the road and asking for donations from people driving past, as it was a pretty busy intersection.

We also got visits from a couple Carroll teachers—Mr. Knowlton, Mr. McKenna, Mr. Gennaro, Mrs. Papantoniou, Mr. D Gallagher, and Mr. Cummings—who let us wash their cars and gave generous donations. By 11:30am, we had raised around $700, and it had finally stopped raining. Mr. Gennaro and his wife went to the dollar store and picked up some new poster board for us, since all of our posters got wet and ripped, and we got back to washing more cars. Many more cars came in once the sun was out, and a man with a Lamborghini even let us wash his car! By the end of our car wash we had earned $920, and after Mr. Fox’s arrival at the end of the day with a generous donation, we made a total of $1020 for our service trip! It was a fun event for a good cause, and we were glad to see some members of the Carroll community come out to support us.
