National Honors Society Induction

On Thursday, November 2nd, seventy-nine juniors and seniors were inducted into Archbishop Carroll’s chapter of the National Honors Society. The ceremony was held in the auditorium, and led by various faculty members and students. I was one of the lucky juniors selected to be in the NHS, and being able to participate in this society is a true honor. The NHS is for juniors and seniors with a cumulative average of 92 or above and is involved in several activities around Archbishop Carroll, such as Career Day and tutoring. The ceremony was opened by the Mixed Select Concert Choir, directed by Mr. Triplett, singing a processional hymn. Reverend Michael Speziale then led the invocation, which was followed by the Pledge of Allegiance and National Anthem. Dr. Anchen Schultz, our principal, welcomed the inductees, present members, faculty, friends, and family. Rev. Speziale, Thomas Donovan, President of NHS, and Mary Bushner, Vice-President, then led the blessing of the NHS pins, which each member proudly wears on their uniform. Mrs. Cahill and Mrs. Owens, the NHS moderators, introduced the 2017-2018 NHS officers, who were voted in by NHS members last year. Thomas Donovan gave an inspiring speech about passing on our light to others. Following the President’s Address was the candle lighting ceremony, led by NHS officers. Each candle represented a pillar of the National Honors Society, which are character, scholarship, leadership, and service. These pillars represent what the NHS stands for and aims to achieve in the world. Angela Alquiros, NHS Secretary, then led the proclamation of new members by calling each member’s name as they went on the stage to receive their pin and certificate. Each member was congratulated by Mr. Fox and Dr. Schultz. Angela then led a roll call of the present members of NHS. After the members were recognized, Thomas Donovan led the National Honors Society pledge. The inductees were standing in front of the stage, reading the pledge, and holding candles. Following the pledge, Mary Bushner presented the guest speaker: Mrs. Charmaine Gates. Personally, I was very glad to listen to Mrs. Gates’s motivating words. As a sophomore, I took AP European History with Mrs. Gates and it was a tough class. Despite that, Mrs. Gates made it enjoyable and I was very sad to hear about her retirement, so much so that our class, along with past students, threw her a retirement party. Following the Mrs. Gates’s speech, Mr. Triplett led the Mixed Select Concert Choir in the choral selection, “Why We Sing”. The closing remarks were then given by Mr. Fox, during which we were told that we are “awesome and spectacular”, his classic words of encouragement. To close the night, Archbishop Carroll’s Alma Mater was performed, bringing everyone together with school spirit. I am truly honored to have been inducted into the National Honors Society, and cannot wait to see what we will accomplish this upcoming year
